The goal of the present learning situation is to raise learners awareness of the impact of their everyday household chores on the wider environment and to encourage them to explore and adopt more eco-friendly housecleaning practices. In the process of carrying out a variety of challenging language activities, learners become more informed decision makers when it comes to environmental matters while, at the same time, enhancing and refining their language knowledge.
Learners carry out a variety of challenging reading, writing, speaking and listening activities. In the process they exercise their operational competencies, develop positive attitudes and extend their use of social and material resources. The learning situation `Clean and Green` consists of 4 activities: ACTIVITY 1. `Raising Awareness.` Learners identify common household chores that they perform on a regular basis. ACTIVITY 2. `Researching to Verify and Expand Existing Knowledge.` Learners conduct research on the Internet to obtain more precise information about the effects of household cleaning practices on the environment. ACTIVITY 3. `Researching Green Methods of Housecleaning.` Learners explore ways to reduce the harmful effects of common household cleaning practices on the environment. ACTIVITY 4. `Creating a Handbook of Green Housecleaning Tips.` Learners create a user-friendly handbook of tips for green housecleaning, which they can take home for other members of the family, or make available online.
The activities in this situation focus learners' attention on their own household cleaning practices. The information they explore is geared to adults aged 18 and up. However, other than for themselves, some learners may explore ways to reduce the harmful effects of household cleaning practices for younger members of their family or friends.
