DESCRIPTION

This learning situation aims to enhance learners’ language experience and at the same time raise their environmental awareness by having them create a calendar on the environment containing important environmental holidays and “green tips” organized by season/month. It provides learners with an opportunity to explore and integrate two types of written discourse – calendars and tips - and to enlarge their knowledge of eco-friendly practices.

INTENTION PÉDAGOGIQUE

In the course of carrying out the activities, learners improve their language proficiency, particularly in reading and writing, extend their knowledge of eco-friendly practices, expand their use of external resources, and develop positive attitudes as well as a sense of responsibility and concern for the environment. 1. In the first activity, Exploring Calendar Formats, learners examine and compare several calendar formats, identify their common features, read calendars to locate dates, and fill out a blank calendar template with the names of the months and days of the week. 2. In the second activity, Recording Environmental Holidays in a Calendar, learners obtain information about some important environmental holidays celebrated throughout the world and record them in their calendars. 3. In the third activity, Creating a List of Green Tips, learners work on the thematic aspect of their calendars – protecting the environment – and create a list of green tips, organized by season/month, to be included in the final version. 4. In the final activity, learners design and produce the final version of their environmental calendar on a computer, using the raw materials they produced (lists and calendars) in the previous activities.

Utilisation

This learning situation is designed for language learners with low proficiency in both oral and written English, but who have completed a minimum of 100 hours of oral and written English instruction. Once completed, the calendar(s) can be posted on a wall in the classroom or in strategic places in the adult education centre. They can also be personalized and taken home to encourage all members of the family to adopt eco-friendly habits. Of course, the calendar can also be posted online for others to access anytime
