Canada as a whole is a multicultural society: it is one community, many cultures.` This learning situation will help learners find their place both within the smaller community of their classroom and the larger Canadian society.
Learners will conduct a survey of their classmates and create a graph to display their findings. They will also examine some statistics presented in tables and diagrams, and summarize the information in a written text to accompany one of the diagrams.
This LAB is intended for all adult learners but specifically for those in multicultural classrooms in which a substantial number of learners are immigrants or first generation Canadians from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.Because the first activity in this LAB involves learners in getting to know their classmates and where they are from, it could easily serve as the first lesson of the course. This is not necessary, of course, but it is recommended that the LAB be done earlier in the course, rather than later. It should also be done prior to the second LAB (Part 2 Commemorating Traditional Holidays and Festivals around the World), which assumes that learners already know each others ethnic origins.
