DESCRIPTION

In this LAB, Part 2 of One Community, Many Cultures, learners will encounter other cultures through the lens of their special holidays and festivals. This LAB engages them in reading, writing, and discussion activities intended to raise their awareness of the cultural diversity of Canadian society as this is reflected in their own classroom community.

INTENTION PÉDAGOGIQUE

In the first activity of this LAB, learners will create a world calendar that will identify and describe the important holidays and festivals of the different cultures represented in their classroom. In the second activity, learners will prepare and give an oral presentation of a special holiday/festival associated with their own culture. This LAB engages learners in reading, writing, and discussion activities intended to raise their awareness of the cultural diversity of Canadian society as this is reflected in their own classroom community.

Utilisation

`Commemorating Traditional Holidays and Festivals Around the World` is intended for all adult learners but specifically for those in multicultural classrooms in which a substantial number of learners are immigrants or first generation Canadians from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This LAB is intended to follow the first LAB: “Finding Your Place in the Canadian Mosaic,” both of which were developed for the scenario One Community, Many Cultures. Consequently, the activities developed for this LAB provide a complementary and seamless transition from the activities developed for the first one.
