DESCRIPTION

‘’Congratulations! You have won a weekend getaway’’ is a synthesis evaluation created to measure students’ abilities to integrate the competencies acquired throughout their previous learning. Students apply background knowledge as well as acquired knowledge to complete the SE. Synopsis: The student has won a trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario by entering a contest and by using information (various texts, ITC and oral interaction), s/he will be able to communicate his/her needs and preferences in an English-only speaking environment. In the suggested evaluation, the student will have to research information through text and the Internet, express preferences (in writing and orally), fill out a document with personal information, and complete a writing task (write a Thank You note to the owners of the B & B to express gratitude for a wonderful stay in Niagara Falls (past tense will be used). Competencies/skills targeted: ITC, Reading, Writing and Oral expression. A specific Listening evaluation is not included in this evaluation; however, listening is essential and an integral part of the Oral Interaction portion of this evaluation. Please note: a listening portion was initially included in this SE (a dialogue between a taxi driver and customer (student) but it was removed. Any suggestions are welcome.

In this SE, the learner will be able to deal with a real-life situation and express preferences by using: ITC: researching Niagara Falls’ activities (website link provided); Pamphlet, Menu, Student Resources: familiarizing himself/herself with English-only literature and making choices pertaining to preferences and evaluation requirements. Menu: Ordering from the menu to assess Oral Interaction skills. Filling out a document with personal Identification information, personal choices (accommodations, …) and using specific student resources available (Credit Card #): Reinvestment of information from pamphlet and personal choices are necessary. Writing a Thank You note to the owners of the B & B (specific information must be included in the note): Writing requirements and convention as well as Reinvesting information from the SE exercises are required and assessed.
