This Learning Situation design is for teachers to play with. It evolved through workshops with diverse groups of immigrants about provincial politics. It began with a simple question, “What do you know about our provincial election?” The answers were explosive and the class was engaged. It bounced back to looking at the general topic of democracy. Various points in the world have various perspectives of democracy. As we dissected the ideals of democracy, persuasive structure had to be taught but the passion to persuade was intense. Everybody had an opinion. It will be fun to play with. This is actually a progressive series of learning situations and will take about 20 hours to teach from beginning to the end. You might not wish to use the entire LS as it stands so play and invent. I suspect motivation to express an opinion will not be a problem.

The Learner will use persuasive text to demonstrate a coherence of content and be able to formulate a message of their opinion. They will also use response method to show understanding of text by reinvesting information important to the task.
