DESCRIPTION

The goal of this scenario is to initiate the adult literacy learner to the understanding and use of written discourse in the real life situation of locating a service in the Yellow PagesTM directory. The scenario consists of three learning situations: 1- Getting Acquainted with the Yellow PagesTM directory 2- Using the Alphabetical Index in the Yellow PagesTM directory to Locate Specific Services 3- Finding the Name and Phone Number of a Specific Service in the Yellow PagesTM directory

INTENTION PÉDAGOGIQUE

1. Getting Acquainted with the Yellow PagesTM : This learning situation is intended to help adult literacy learners develop an awareness of how basic signs and symbols are used to present and organize information. 2. Using the Alphabetical Index in the Yellow PagesTM to Locate Specific Services* : This learning situation is intended to help adult literacy learners recognize the letters of the alphabet and begin to use alphabetics in order to locate services in the Yellow PagesTM. 3. Finding the Name and Phone Number of a Specific Service in the Yellow PagesTM : This learning situation is intended to help adult literacy learners become more familiar with sound-symbol correspondence and begin to recognize some common high-frequency sight words.

Utilisation

The learning scenario provides an opportunity for adult literacy learners to discover how to locate a service. It introduces them to the concept that the world of print is a powerful tool for communicating information. When they follow through with the activities in the scenario, adult literacy learners will be better equipped to decode and encode meaning in their close surroundings. In the learning activities, learners take the very first steps in reading and writing all the while exercising and developing their operational competencies. They construct basic language knowledge, develop positive attitudes and begin to make use of social and material resources.
